Barbiecore, quiet luxury, and oversized blazers ruled fashion trends online and in real life last year. But now it’s 2024, which means it’s time for new trends to take over. In most cases, anyway.
Today, we’re going to look at the predicted top 2024 fashion trends. What’s popular continues to change as the year goes on and new fads appear, but this post will give you an idea of what to expect in the fashion world.
Many people use upcoming trends as an excuse to buy a closet full of new clothes they won’t wear next year. While there’s nothing wrong with purchasing the occasional trendy piece, trying these trends with pieces you already have is better. And remember, these are just trends. Don’t try them if they’re not your style.
Bows
Toward the end of last year, bows started to show up everywhere. That trend is going strong into 2024. Extra feminine looks are quite popular right now, so it’s not surprising bows came with them.
The best part about bows is how easy they are to add to your outfits without buying new pieces. With an inexpensive roll of ribbon, you can tie bows on everything: your hair, jewelry, dresses, shoes, and more.
Quiet Luxury
This is another trend crossing over from last year, with no signs of slowing down. If you haven’t heard of it, quiet luxury is all about dressing in neutral-colored, high-quality basics without visible logos. The point of this trend is to dress like you’re old money.
To style it, choose items in classic cuts and styles. Try things like long coats, tailored pants, and nondescript sneakers. Avoid patterns, too, going for solid colors instead.
Preppy
Quiet luxury’s younger sibling, preppy style, is coming back too. We’re seeing collared shirts, polos, and sweater vests on the rise again. Neutral colors are popular, but so are fun colors like pink, blue, and green.
Preppy looks are all about the layers. Vests, blazers, and tights all help add dimension to your outfits. You can also try a more preppy grunge look this year since it seems like that’s coming back, too.
Big Bags
Many runways this spring saw designers using giant bags in their looks. If you love using tote bags because of how much they can hold, you’re in luck. Not only will totes continue to trend, but you’ll be able to find other oversized bag styles soon.
If you have big old bags in your closet, now is a great time to pull them out and clean them up. Or, since slouchy bags are trendy right now, you could even try sewing your own bag.
Capris
Attention, 90s/2000s girls, capris are back. People wear them in all kinds of looks, from activewear to office casual. If you hated the trend the first time, sorry. If you loved it, it’s time to jump back into your favorite pair.
While you can buy capris, they’re also easy to make. All you have to do is cut off a pair of pants you’re no longer feeling and hem them if you’re feeling fancy. You can also check thrift stores for people getting rid of them.
Hot Pants
In contrast to capris, hot pants, micro shorts, and underwear as pants are all growing in popularity this year. We’ve seen them styled under oversized blazers or over tights to make risque officewear looks or used to create vintage-inspired outfits.
Thrifting is once again a great way to find hot pants. They’re considered vintage, so try places like Poshmark or Depop if you’re having no luck at your local thrift store.
Sheer Clothing
Sheer always seems to be trending in some form. Currently, we’re seeing a lot of sheer dresses and skirts. People continue to love their risque looks, often wearing these pieces with only nude underwear underneath.
This trend isn’t for everyone, but it could be fun to play around with for your next event. For a more PG-13 look, try wearing it over other clothes to create an interesting, multi-dimensional outfit.
Multiple Belts
Military and grunge-inspired looks are starting to grow in popularity again. Along with that are the age-old wearing two (or more) belts. It gives your outfit dimension and makes a cool statement under a long coat or over a frilly dress.
This is another great chance to shop your closet. What belts do you already have that you can pair together? They could match, or you could pick completely different colors, styles, or widths.
Grandpa Chic
If you love the look of oversized sweaters, corduroy, and flat caps, then Grandpa Chic is for you. It’s pretty much what it sounds like– dressing like a classic grandpa. It means wearing more vintage-style pieces and warm, earth-toned colors.
You probably already have plenty in your closet for this trend. But if not, this is the perfect chance to shop the men’s section at second-hand stores. Look for pieces that already feel lived in and loved to nail the look.
Trends shouldn’t define the way you dress or the clothes you buy. But they can be fun to try and challenge you to style what you own differently.
